To raise the quality of life of individuals, businesses and community groups by using e-technology; beyond overcoming barriers, towards personal wellbeing and economic wealth creation.

The aim is to improve business and industry, learning, health and community life for Somerset residents and businesses, whilst preserving the environment. We will achieve this by the intelligent application of e-technology in the workplace, home and community groups.

We use the term “e-technology” to cover use of the internet, digital information technology and knowledge:

  • > Internet for access to information/content and to systems such as email, web, mobile communications. From fixed and mobile locations (e.g. via broadband and wireless).
  • > Digital information technology for business and personal systems and databases.
  • > Knowledge is the competence to use e-technology: the know-how, best practices, intellectual property required for excellent business practices and personal living.

broadband linkImagine a world where you..

A) start a voice call on you home phone and transfer it seamlessly to your mobile as you drive to work

B) send a multimedia message from your car that later appears on your HDTV screen at home and the family can watch it on a wireless PDA in the garden

C) have a mobile phone conversation with two or three friends and simultaneously share a video of the football match you are attending

D) use video conferencing to connect with clients and colleagues whether they are in the office, at home or travelling

secure imageE) relatives and neighbours are automatically alerted when an old or infirm person becomes ill or has a fall

F) children are regularly taught remotely by specialist teachers located across the county or perhaps in other counties

G) and that all of the above can be done with a single account, on a single log-in with multiple devices over any number of access networks.

All of these possibilities are likely to become reality over the next three to five years. As they develop, so will the expectations of people and organisations. Somerset needs the capability, infrastructure and knowledge – to become known as a well-connected county.
