Modern technology is bringing visitors streaming to one of Somerset’s oldest buildings, thanks to a grant from Connecting Somerset.
Anthea and Will Peppin operate The Ancient Barn and Stables in Castle Cary – providing self-catering accommodation in a 600-year-old barn, ancient stables and a weaver’s cottage.
The grant means that the business can benefit from six months free broadband. Anthea said: “I get lots of visitors from USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
I had one lady who came from Alaska for a week simply because she had seen our medieval beams on the Internet. Nowadays, the Internet is absolutely essential as a way of reaching today’s tourists. The broadband economy is changing the whole pattern of the way the business works.
“Broadband will make a huge difference to me. It means I can receive telephone calls whilst I am online. It will also save me time because it is so much faster than a standard dial up connection.
“This makes it quicker for me to update my website and send and receive emails. And because broadband is always on, if I get an enquiry, I can respond instantly. People love that and it makes it more likely that they will make a booking.”
