Content
Management System (CMS). Keeping your website up-to-date
used to mean contacting your web designer to do it but now you can
have websites made so that you can up date each page yourself.
CMS websites give you editorial control over the web pages throughout
your website. Most work by offering you a private secure login
into an admin area of your website. Then you select from a menu
which web page you want to edit and up pops a program similar
to a word processing program. You make the changes or additions,
click save, and hey presto your web page is updated.
Compared to a new website built with CMS, existing websites can
at times take longer to develop CMS. So if you are commissioning
a new website you may want to consider this option now rather than
later. It will save you time and money in the long term.
There are two types of CMS you can buy. Internet based ones and
software based ones. Internet based ones reside on your actual website.
Software based ones are programmes installed on a computer which
are used to connect to the website.
An Internet based CMS usually costs around £300-£1500
on top of any web design fees and depending on what you can do within
the CMS the price could rise. Speak to your web designer about updating
your own website.
In general with a CMS you would be able to edit and add text, add
or replace images, add links, upload documents and link them, add
and remove pages and much more.
